My sweet husband has nominated me this year to participate in the Kentucky Oaks Survivors Parade as part of the Kentucky Derby festivities. For the eighth year, the Survivors Parade presented by Kroger will take place on Friday, May 6th, 2016. It is a march of breast and ovarian cancer survivors, which takes place on Churchill Downs’ historic racetrack. 142 breast and ovarian cancer survivors will walk in the parade directly prior to the 142nd running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks race. As a breast cancer survivor, I work with the LIVESTRONG program at the YMCA, where I help other survivors get their lives back on track through a 12-week health and fitness program. This group inspires me more than they’ll ever know! There’s my fashion diva, Laura, who dyes her hair blue to match her outfit — she’s in pain daily but comes to our classes with a smile on her face. There’s Sue — who is always to first to introduce herself to others and encourage the newbies. There’s Rusti — who is best at keeping the atmosphere light and helping us laugh despite our circumstances. And there’s Georgianna — who joined the program when she was battling depression and weight gain — and today she is a fit, bubbly and confident trainer for LIVESTRONG. I can name dozens more who have inspired, encouraged and helped me to live and love better despite cancer.
It’s my desire to bring awareness not only to cancer, but also to how we can not only survive it — we can thrive through healthy choices, spiritual wellness and emotional support! If you have a chance, please vote for me at the link below so I can participate in the Kentucky Oaks Survivors Parade. Voting closes on March 15th.
